The Songs We Sing: Great Are You Lord

“Great Are You Lord”

Artist: One Sonic Society

Album: Make A Way

Written By: David Leonard, Jason Ingram, Leslie Jordan

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
And great are You Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are You Lord

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name…

– Psalm 96:3-8a

There is something powerful in songs when they are able to capture an element of simplicity while at the same time wondrously portraying the greatness of God. This song accomplishes this in a way that I believe is endlessly important for the church as worshipers in God’s kingdom. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has ever considered the question, “Why worship through song?” “What’s the point of it?” Now this is the point where this short thought could become a 20 page dissertation on the purpose and theology of worship but in keeping with the theme of simplicity I will do my best to keep this thought brief.

Simply put, I believe there is something splendid and miraculous about music as a medium. Songs have a way of penetrating us to the heart in ways that other mediums just don’t. And so when you take the power of music and combine it with the truth of God’s Word; the potential to impact the human heart goes through the roof!

The idea that this song captures so simply is that we will worship the Lord through praise, simply because He is too great not to! The Word promises that one day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Christ is Lord.

So today, we who have come to realize the greatness and power of God, will use our breath to pour out praise to the Father because it was his breath to begin with! He placed breath in our lungs, and all his creations were made by him, through him, and for him. We were created to attest to the greatness of our Lord God and so we will join with the rest of creation and even our bones will sing “Great are You Lord”!

We recommend you look through these passages and spend time meditating on the greatness of our God. Leave a comment below if you see other passages that remind you of God’s greatness.
