Follow Jesus. Be Changed By Jesus. Commit To The Mission Of Jesus.

By Travis Roberts

In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
 – Ephesians 1:5-6

Six days before Christmas my sister and brother-in-law received some incredible news. After three years of waiting for a child to adopt they got a phone call that changed their lives. A baby had just been born and they were selected to be the new parents. You see, a young couple knew from the moment they became pregnant that they weren’t going to keep the child. They almost lived in denial that they were pregnant at all. So when the time came to give birth they were ready to sign the baby away to new parents; my sister and brother-in-law.

It was surreal for them. In 24 hours they had gone from a couple with no kids to being given a brand new baby boy. They named him Oliver and welcomed him into their homes and hearts. But before he could become a Landrith, they had to sit before a judge so he could finalize the process.

I got to witness this first hand. It was an incredible thing. Here is this baby boy who had no voice of his own yet, no power to decide where or who he’d end up with but God had a plan.

The court room was filled with nerves and excitement and anxiousness all at once. Could someone step in during the last minute and claim him over my sister? Could the judge prolong this case or wipe it out completely? Were all the details resolved with the paperwork? Had my sister and brother-in-law’s lawyer crossed all the T’s and dotted all the I’s? So many questions and so much hope.

As the hearing proceeded the judge made his ruling: he told them that this baby boy was now a Landrith. Oliver’s life had changed just as it got started.

I walked away humbled and thankful. And I reflected on the passage in Ephesians. We are adopted as sons through Jesus Christ.

God finalizes and approves this adoption because our rights come in the person and work of Christ. Just as Oliver was given a new family we are given the same.

We’re given a legacy, worth and inheritance because the judge has signed off on it. And from here forward, we never have to earn our place or work to stay in the family. We are family because Christ is that good.

Be blessed today by the fact that your adoption is complete in Christ.
